In the first three quarters of 2026, China's shipbuilding industry once again demonstrated its global dominance with a series of impressive figures. The latest statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology show that in the first nine months, China's shipbuilding completed a total of 580.5 million deadweight tons, an increase of 50.7% year-on-year; new orders reached 175.29 million deadweight tons, a significant increase of 163.2% year-on-year; and the number of orders in hand stood at 399.13 million deadweight tons as of the end of September, an increase of 64.8% year-on-year. The growth rates of all three indicators remained at a high level, and China's shipbuilding continues to hold the top position globally.
Behind the data lies a highly valuable market share. In the first three quarters, China's shipbuilding completed a total of 580.5 million deadweight tons, new orders reached 175.29 million deadweight tons, and orders in hand stood at 399.13 million deadweight tons, respectively accounting for 63.6%, 81.8%, and 72.4% of the global market. This means that nearly two out of every three delivered ships worldwide are built by Chinese shipyards, and over 80% of new orders go to China. Against the backdrop of the global shipbuilding industry experiencing a deep adjustment in the previous round and the continuous changes in the patterns of Japan and South Korea, China's shipbuilding industry, with its complete industrial chain, stable delivery capabilities, and continuously improving technical levels, firmly holds a half of the global market share, further consolidating its leading position.
What is more noteworthy is that the gold content of this round of growth is increasingly focusing on "green". The data shows that China's international market share for new green-powered ship orders reached 74.1%, an increase of 5.7 percentage points compared to the previous half year. This releases a clear signal: China's shipbuilding industry not only "builds a lot", but also "builds new and green".
At the same time, changes in the external environment have also added new variables to the shipping and shipbuilding markets. Affected by the situation in the Middle East, international oil prices have risen significantly recently. High oil prices have not only exacerbated market concerns about inflationary pressure, but also pushed down the prices of precious metals and other assets. At the same time, the rising fuel costs are reshaping shipowners' decision-making on ship orders - the operational cost advantages of traditional-powered ships have been weakened, and the economic performance of green and energy-efficient ships has become more prominent, potentially adding fuel to the green-powered ship market.
