On August 18th, Eastern Time, Bloomberg News quoted an insider source, stating that the Mexican government is evaluating a new round of trade restrictions and plans to continue raising tariffs on imported goods from countries that have not signed free trade agreements, such as China, South Korea, India, and Vietnam. Textiles, clothing fabrics, and ready-made clothes are listed as key controlled categories, while steel derivatives, automotive parts, electronic products, and plastic consumer goods are also included in the assessment list.

This new regulation implements differentiated treatment. Countries with free trade agreements such as the United States, Canada, and the European Union are not subject to tariff constraints. The policy's target mainly points to Asian supply chain countries. Currently, the Mexican Ministry of Economy and Finance are still in the internal assessment stage and have not released a formal bill. They are widely soliciting opinions from the local manufacturing industry. Although the plan has not been implemented yet, considering the continuous tightening of trade trends in the past two years, textile export enterprises need to make risk predictions in advance.

The textile industry has become a major target for tariff adjustments

Mexico's trade protection policy is not a temporary measure. Since 2026, two large-scale tariff rounds have already been implemented. The textile and clothing industry has been at the forefront of each round of impact.

On January 2026, Mexico upgraded the temporary tariffs to permanent regulations, imposing a 10% - 50% tariff on 1,463 product tax numbers. Textile-related products cover over a thousand tax numbers, including yarn, fabric, fabric, and various ready-made clothes. The tax rate for textiles was raised to 25% - 35%, and the highest for ready-made clothes was up to 45%. The import volume involved was as high as 52 billion US dollars.
