Currently, the speed of oil tankers sailing around the Strait of Hormuz has generally dropped to zero, and various ships are basically in a suspended operation state. Several European countries have urgently issued bans, prohibiting their own oil tankers from passing through this strait. More importantly, the war risks in Iranian waters and the adjacent waters of the Gulf will be officially lifted on March 5th, which means that once ships enter this area, they will completely lose risk protection. As the only passage from the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean, the suspension of the Strait of Hormuz has directly cut off about 20% of the global oil transportation routes and the transportation paths of a large number of container goods. The entire shipping chain instantly fell into a "stuck" predicament.
The shipping companies collectively pressed the "pause button", and the Middle East shipping route completely stopped accepting shipments.
In the face of the escalating situation, global shipping giants such as MSC, Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, and CMA CGM have all urgently released emergency response measures. The details are as follows:
Total suspension of navigation: All ships have been halted from passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Ships currently on the route have turned to safe areas to seek shelter and wait.
Suspension of booking: MSC was the first to announce the suspension of cargo bookings for destinations in the Middle East worldwide. Subsequently, many other shipping companies followed suit and completely closed the booking channels for the Middle East routes.
Mandatory rerouting: Several shipping companies such as CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, and Maersk have forced the relevant routes involving the Middle East to reroute through the Cape of Good Hope. This adjustment has increased the voyage distance by approximately 3,500 nautical miles and extended the sailing time by at least 10 days.
Freight forwarder suspension: Freight forwarder companies in multiple domestic regions have simultaneously issued notices, announcing the suspension of cargo collection on the Middle East route. For some goods that have been loaded but not yet set sail, they are required to go through the procedures of returning the goods and re-exporting them. While for the goods currently on the voyage, they have been temporarily dispatched to the transshipment port and are awaiting further instructions. .
